Prometheus, a Titan in Greek Mythology, dared to stand up to the mighty Zeus who wanted to keep mankind in a primitive state. Prometheus gave humans skills and knowledge, among other things. For his rebellion against Zeus he was punished.
Perhaps the most well known of Prometheus's gifts was fire. The fire that hovers over the links in the navigation bar represents the gift of knowledge Prometheus gave to man as Lord Byron wrote in his poem "Prometheus" (1816).
"...Thy Godlike crime was to be kind...
And strengthen Man with his own mind..."
